The Government has laid a statutory instrument in Parliament to formally establish the Cumbria Combined Authority, marking the final legislative stage before its creation.

The new mayoral combined authority is set to launch early next year, with elections for Cumbria’s first mayor scheduled for May 2027.

Mark Fryer, leader of Cumberland Council, said: "This is a historic moment for Cumbria.

"Devolution will deliver more investment for residents’ priorities, including funding for improved infrastructure, and will mean decisions are made closer to the people they affect."

Under the devolution agreement, Cumbria will receive at least £333 million over the next 30 years.

The region will also have the opportunity to bid for additional Mayoral Investment Funds.

Funding is expected to support infrastructure projects such as rail and road upgrades aimed at enhancing connectivity and driving economic growth.

The Combined Authority will gain powers currently held by Westminster, including the ability to develop a single integrated transport plan for Cumbria, and drive regeneration and housing projects.

It will also be able to invest in skills and training programmes designed to meet the needs of employers in the area.

Jonathan Brook, leader of Westmorland and Furness Council, welcomed the step.

He said: "This is a significant step towards establishing a combined authority.

"This will help secure additional funds and powers for Cumbria, that would not have been available to the two councils alone.

"We continue to discuss with government, what further benefits devolution can offer residents, communities and businesses."

The mayor will also represent Cumbria on the Council of Nations and Regions.
