Bolton town centre, Ashton and Stalybridge, and Oldham are in line to get vehicles aimed at turbocharging regeneration projects.
The Greater Manchester Combined Authority will meet next week to approve in principal the establishment of a trio of Mayoral Development Corporations.
The MDC model, which provides long-term strategic vision and a broad range of tools to unlock complex projects, has been successful in Stockport and is also planned to drive forward the regeneration of Old Trafford, Northern Gateway, Wigan, and Middleton.
Bolton MDC
In Bolton, the MDC would drive forward the town’s renaissance with a particular focus on projects like Church Wharf and the redevelopment of Crompton Place, which MEPC has recently been appointed to deliver.
Ashton and Stalybridge MDC
Focused on the rail corridor that runs between the two Tameside towns, an MDC for Ashton and Stalybridge could help to deliver 3,000 mixed-tenure homes as well as commercial space.
Oldham MDC
In Oldham, the MDC would focus on the delivery of housing across its brownfield town centre sites and the £70m SportsTown initiative.
With Oldham Athletic’s Boundary Park at its centre, the SportsTown project would “transform Oldham into a multi-sport centre of excellence that integrates education, sport, health, wellness and community regeneration”, according to a GMCA report.
All three locations suffer from market failure and viability issues that the MDC model will seek to navigate and overcome in line with the GMCA’s Good Growth strategy, which aims to improve economic and social outputs in the North of the conurbation.
