Here’s something to try in 2006! Move beyond career wishes, i.e. “Get more experience.” “Improve my skills.” “Build my network.”

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀:

𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤, 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘢𝘭𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴 – 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴!

1. Instead of “build my network” → “Secure introductions to 5 new contacts and thought leaders by the end of February and schedule coffee meetings with each.”
2. Instead of “get more experience” → Be specific e.g. “Lead a £1M project from plan to ribbon cutting.”
3. Instead of “improve my skills” → detail the skills and the timeline e.g. “Achieve Prince 2 Project Management Qualification by end of July”

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘭𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘴, 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴. Your next promotion won’t come from having good ideas—it’ll come from demonstrating measurable impact from delivery – e.g. measurable outputs such as ha of industrial land developed; no. businesses retained, expansion, and attracted; no. unemployed residents in employment for > 6 months.

Stop setting goals that feel good and start setting targets that get meaningful results.
